Welcome! こんにちは!
Welcome to my Japanese Major E-Portfolio, this site is dedicated to show my accomplishments and experiences while learning Japanese Language and Culture at California State University Monterey bay (CSUMB). Here I will present my academic identity, resume, courses, Service Learning, Integrated Narrative, Major Learning Outcomes, and my undergraduate capstone Education California State University, Monterey Bay Graduation: Spring 2019 Major: Japanese Language and Culture Minor: Global Studies About me I am Tyrus Torres, an undergraduate at California State University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB). I am currently studying for a B.A. in Japanese Language and Culture and a minor in Global Studies. I am from Sacramento, California where I attended Sierra Community College and transferred to CSUMB to continue my education and enjoy the coastal atmosphere of Monterey Bay. Since Fall 2016, I have been lucky enough to be apart of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) and the McNair’s Scholars Program. In the summer of 2016 I had my first research experience as an intern with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) in Monterey Bay. With the JACL and other interns, I studied the social perceptions of Japanese Americans in the 1920’s through the 1950’s. I learned how to analyze newspaper microfilm from local libraries, identify deceased and living individuals through government records, handle material culture such as photographs, compile data into large spreadsheets, and finally understand why Monterey was unique in it’s acceptance of Japanese Americans. With the JACL I was able to prepare for undergraduate research by learning how to handle unobtrusive data and organize it efficiently. From these organizations I have become more and more interested with undergraduate research, with a focus on minority groups and transnational labor. My interests in minority groups stem from my own personal identity of growing up with a mixed ethnic background which then expanded into a focus on how transnational labor is handled around the world. Through this web page I hope to catalog my experiences and my path to an even higher education. I will discuss challenges that I encounter, how I overcome them, as well as mistakes that I make along the way! I hope this experience can help others prepare, progress, and reflect on their own paths through education. |
